Amma gave them inspiration and guided them what to do and supported them to carry on. Later Ashramites and devotees joined this when Amma announced this project as Amala Bharatam &#8211; to clean India to make her healthy and beautiful &#8211; on her 57th birthday celebration on 27th Sep 2010. <\/p>\n<p>Here are some statistics of the  Amritapuri based &#8216;Amala Bharatam&#8217; Campaign as on 31st Oct 2010 <\/p>\n<p> <strong>Places and distances covered <\/strong><br \/>\n1.\tVallikkavu to Vavvakkavu \u2013 6 kms<br \/>\n2.\tVavvakkavu to Puthiyakavu on NH47 \u2013 5 kms<br \/>\n3.\tPuthiyakavu to Karunagappally on NH 47\u2013 4 kms<br \/>\n4.\tKarunagappally Town on NH47 \u2013 5 sq. kms<br \/>\n5.\tSasthamcotta Lake \u2013 Drinking water resource for Kollam district \u2013 4 square kms<br \/>\n6.\tKarunagappally Temple and Market \u2013 3 sq. kms<br \/>\n7.\tOachira Temple premises and Town \u2013 4 sq.  kms<br \/>\n8.\tVavvakkavu to Haripad on NH47 \u2013 22 kms<\/p>\n<p>Towns covered  \u2013 Vallikkavu, Vavvakkavu, Puthiyakavu, Karunagappally, Sasthamcotta, Oachira, Kayamkulam, Haripad \u2013 Total 8<br \/>\nTotal road distance covered \u2013 37 kms; On NH47<br \/>\nTotal area covered  in town cleanups \u2013 20 sq.kms<\/p>\n<p><strong>No of students who participated in the Cleanup drive<\/strong><br \/>\n1.\tVallikkavu to Vavvakkavu \u2013 300 volunteers<br \/>\n2.\tVavvakkavu to Puthiyakavu on NH47 \u2013 400 volunteers<br \/>\n3.\tPuthiyakavu to Karunagappally on NH 47\u2013 400 volunteers<br \/>\n4.\tKarunagappally Town on NH47 \u2013 500 volunteers<br \/>\n5.\tSasthamcotta Lake \u2013 Drinking water resource for Kollam district \u2013 400 volunteers<br \/>\n6.\tKarunagappally Temple and Market \u2013 400 volunteers<br \/>\n7.\tOachira Temple premises and Town \u2013 500 volunteers<br \/>\n8.\tVavvakkavu to Haripad on NH47 \u2013 22 kms \u2013 1200 volunteers<br \/>\nIn all, 4,100 volunteers participated in the dawn to dusk (6.30 am to 7.00 pm) cleanup drive in all these locations. <\/p>\n<p>Volunteers belong to students of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus from School of Ayurveda, Engineering, Arts &#038; Science, Biotechnology and Business. In addition students from Amrita Industrial Training Centre, brahmacharies and brahmacharinies of MA Math and devotees also participated in the drive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Truckload of waste disposed \/ buried \/ recycle during each drive<\/strong><br \/>\n1.\tVallikkavu to Vavvakkavu \u2013 20 truckload<br \/>\n2.\tVavvakkavu to Puthiyakavu on NH47 \u2013 25 truckload<br \/>\n3.\tPuthiyakavu to Karunagappally on NH 47\u2013 25 truckload<br \/>\n4.\tKarunagappally Town on NH47 \u2013 50 truckload<br \/>\n5.\tSasthamcotta Lake \u2013 Drinking water resource for Kollam district \u2013 40 truckload<br \/>\n6.\tKarunagappally Temple and Market \u2013 40 truckload<br \/>\n7.\tOachira Temple premises and Town \u2013 50 truckload<br \/>\n8.\tVavvakkavu to Haripad on NH47 \u2013 120 truckload<br \/>\nTotal waste disposed \u2013 400 truck loads over 8 cleanup drive<\/p>\n<p>Each truckload is around 8 \u2013 10 tonnes of waste \u2013 both recyclable and non \u2013 recyclable<br \/>\nAround 10 \u2013 15 percent of the waste is recyclable. Most of the waste is bio-degradable waste<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disposal of waste: <\/strong><br \/>\nBiodegradable waste is buried in pits dug up by JCBS in suitable places identified in advance, both on the sides of roads and private property, depending on the availability.<br \/>\nRecyclable waste such as plastics, metals, paper, packaging material, etc. is transported to the recycling centre in Amritapuri. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Key Information<\/strong><br \/>\nVehicles used \u2013 JCBs, Tippers, Trucks, tractors, medium and small sized tempos and carriers<br \/>\nTools used for the cleanup work \u2013 showels, spades, sickles, rakes, brooms, gloves, masks, etc. <\/p>\n<p>The volunteers are organised into various teams. Broadly the teams constitute of<br \/>\n1.\tWaste gathering team<br \/>\n2.\tWaste disposal team<br \/>\n3.\tJCB \/ Tipper team<br \/>\n4.\tTools team<br \/>\n5.\tWater and refreshment team<br \/>\n6.\tAwareness Campaign team<br \/>\n7.\tFirst Aid team<\/p>\n<p><strong>The kind of activities typically carried out during the cleanup drive is:<\/strong><br \/>\n1.\tDeciding the location \u2013 extend and scope of work<br \/>\n2.\tIdentifying the areas to be cleaned<br \/>\n3.\tSurvey of the total volume and type of waste to be cleared<br \/>\n4.\tIdentifying spots for burying biodegradable waste<br \/>\n5.\tSecuring permission from concerned authorities for digging pits<br \/>\n6.\tInforming all concerned authorities \u2013 Municipality, panchayat, police, water authority, PWD, telephones, Electricity board, local establishments, etc<br \/>\n7.\tForming volunteers into manageable groups under a team leader<br \/>\n8.\tSourcing tools for the work to be carried out<br \/>\n9.\tAssigning tasks to each team<br \/>\n10.\tArranging for various resources like vehicles, medical aid, refreshments, etc to support the clean up drive.<br \/>\n11.\tTrain volunteers to carry out awareness campaign<br \/>\n12.\tDocument the work such as photos, videos, etc. to create material for awareness campaign in communities for volunteer registrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The &#8216;Amala Bharatam&#8217; Campaign was started by the students of Amrita Viswa Vidya Peetham, Amritapuri Campus on August 15th, 2010.
