Jewish devotees celebrate Rosh Hashanah with Amma
    20 Sep 2017, Amritapuri
The Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashanah- starts in the new moon of this month. This year it falls on the same 10 days of Navartri. These days have a very important significance in the Jewish tradition. It’s a time that God is watching and deciding what is going to happen with you in the coming year according to their faith. It’s a time for prayer, contemplation and forgiveness.

Every year Amma’s Jewish children from Isreal and around the world come to celebrate with her. Last night they sang traditional Jewish songs, and then Amma then sang in Hebrew, “Everyone in the world.” Then at the end of darshan Amma fed all apples, dates, and honey, which are the traditional offerings on this day, symbolizing that the coming year will be sweet and good.

The devotees were singing in Hebrew “next year we will spread our hands in front of the big white light that is pouring out…” As they were singing the traditional Jewish New Year’s song Amma started clapping the hands of the devotees standing around her making it a memorable, unique beginning of another year.

*Living with Sri Krishana, Janmashtami celebrations at Amritapuri*

The day’s festivities began with the Go Puja, the traditional cow worship. This ceremony is done on this day because Sri Krishna was a cowherd in his youth. At the head of a procession, the Ashram cows made their way to the front of the ashram where the special puja was performed.

Amma joined in the festivities, observing the Uriyadi games, surrounded by countless little Krishnas and Radhas, including some very little ones who sat on Amma’s lap.
Later, Amma sang many songs to Sri Krishna during the evening bhajans. Then, after the traditional reading of the Srimad Bhagavatam, as the clock struck midnight, amidst arati and the reverberations of gongs and drums, the moment of Sri Krishna’s birth was commemorated, and it was as if he was being born again in that very moment in the hearts of the assembled devotees.

After her message, Amma sang, ‘Madhava gopala mana mohana gopala,’ and danced along with the devotees. Finally, Amma led all in a for a prayer for world peace and distributed prasad.

All went to bed with minds full of Sri Krishna, and with hearts full of gratitude for the blessing of being able to live in Amma’s presence, every moment of their lives drenched in love, just as the gopis and gopas lived with Sri Krishna.

*Realise Your “Krishna-hood” and Thumb Your Nose at Death*
Each one of us is actually born into the darkness of a prison—the prison of ignorance and karmic bonds. We are born crying, live crying and die crying. However, Krishna was born with a smile, lived with a smile, and was smiling even when he cast off his mortal frame. Krishna was able to do this because he always saw the unchanging true face of Eternity behind the ever-changing masks of impermanence. Thus, when we are able to realise the Krishna-hood that is our true nature, we will likewise be able to look death in the face, thumb our nose at it and laugh.

    *Teachers Lighting the Path*

Teachers are one of the vital keys to the development of our villages. They are educating the children for the future.

On September 5th, village schools celebrated National Teachers’ Day. The classes are replaced by activities of celebration and gratitude for teachers. Children sang songs, narrated poems, played games and conducted storytelling sessions. All of these communication modes helped the students realise the importance of teachers in our lives. Upon exploring this idea, they were even able to see that everything is our teacher. When regarded in the right way, even a plant teaches us a lot.

Shikshak and pita pujas were also performed. In Nagla Purviya, Uttar Pradesh, a kitchen garden was initiated at the primary school. Seeds sown included spinach, methi, soya, beets, radishes, and chick peas—all rich in iron.
