{"id":1250,"date":"2009-01-18T14:33:18","date_gmt":"2009-01-18T09:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/e.amritapuri.org\/blogs\/?p=1250"},"modified":"2010-09-21T12:18:37","modified_gmt":"2010-09-21T06:48:37","slug":"ammatreshing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/e.amritapuri.org\/blogs\/2009\/1250\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of a Master"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;direction: ltr;line-height: 14.4pt;text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Three days before Amma left for the South India tour, She surprised us on a quiet Friday by coming down from her room for an afternoon of rice threshing seva.\u00a0 Apparently the ashram has some farm land and this was the first harvest.\u00a0 I was lucky enough to be there to see her demonstrating and teaching bramarcharinis and western devotees.\u00a0 She stood surrounded by large mounds of hay and many devotees who were lifting the hay and trying to shake and bang it on benches to release the rice grains from the hay.\u00a0 There was a lot of \u2018whack, whack, whack\u2019 on the benches with not much result and then Amma herself picked up a big stack and demonstrated.\u00a0 She held it over her head and brought it down to the bench and \u2018whoosh\u2019\u2026 the rice fell perfectly from the straw.\u00a0 She did it with such strength and beauty and it was inspiring to watch.\u00a0 She made the task look effortless and easy as a stick dance.\u00a0 It made me recall a passage I read once about the beauty of action done by a Mahatma\u2026 that each and every motion they make is so lovely to watch because of the stillness inside them.\u00a0 The motion comes from this stillness and that\u2019s why it has such beauty.\u00a0 So rice threshing became a beautiful dance.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">She and we continued threshing for quite some time and it was messy and chaotic and fun.\u00a0 Afterward she sat and told stories and I didn\u2019t learn until later that she was telling about her childhood when she had the chore of threshing rice and was scolded by her grandmother for doing it wrong.\u00a0 There is a wonderful article on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amritapuri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #003399;text-decoration: none\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">amritapuri.org<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"> with much more about what she said.\u00a0 She talked about her love of nature and chasing dragon flies\u2026 take a look.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">After the stories we walked to the beach for a rare chance to meditate with Amma there and watch the sun go down.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">Here\u2019s the web link for the article: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amritapuri.org\/2623\/harvest-festival.aum\"><span style=\"color: #003399;text-decoration: none\"><span style=\"font-size: small;font-family: Times New Roman\">http:\/\/www.amritapuri.org\/2623\/ harvest-festival \/<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Forgive my mistakes on threshing terminology\u2026 I know nothing about it!
