“For most of us, birthdays are happy occasions—a day to celebrate. We wish to receive as many gifts as possible and be joyous. We don’t like to listen to anything sad or depressing. If someone tells us some depressing news or reminds us of something unpleasant we say, “Please, not today! It’s my birthday!” But, as everyone knows, this is not how it is with Amma. She uses the occasion to direct everyone’s attention to the poor and suffering. We say, “Oh, Amma, it’s your birthday!” and Amma says, “Remember the poor and needy. Think of them. Understand their suffering. Help them in whichever way you can. Think of the depressed and lonely. Pray for them… Let’s together do something to ease their agony. Remember the patients, who are in pain, who do not even have enough money to buy painkillers…” – Swami Amritaswarupanada ( From the welcome speech of the occasion of launching of charitable projects
