Dr. M. Lakshmi Kumari, Director, Vivekananda Vedic Vision Foundation, recipient of the 2017 Amritakeerthi Puraskaram, said, “I feel like a small squirrel who took part in the Ramasethu constructions and got Sri Rama’s blessings as his award. The only gift we can give to Amma one her birthday is to become part of the great work she is doing.”

Sri. P.C. George, MLA, said, “Amma is the exact replica of God.

Sri. M.K. Raghavan, MP, said, “Amma was the first to speak Malayalam at the United Nations. Through Amma’s words our mother tongue became lucky. Amma is a fascinating symbol of love and fraternity.”

Shri Kadannamppally Ramachandran , Minister for Ports, Museums, Archaeology and Archives, Kerala, and his wife garlanded Amma and each of them sang a song in between Swamiji’s bhajans.

Sri. K.C. Venugopal, MP, said, “Amma’s compassion is flowing like a stream into everywhere year after year. While experiencing this, we should be able to impart this to others.”

Leader of Opposition, Kerala Legislative Assembly, Sri Ramesh Chennithala, said that, “In today’s chaotic social scenario, Amma is becoming ‘a shower of elixir.’ Sri Mata Amritanandamayi is a wonderful phenomenon pervading the world.”

Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostam, Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, said, “Amma is the symbol of God. She only wears the garb of a human being. Amma is a great solace to society. After my death when I am in heaven, if God asks me, ‘What was the best thing that happaned in your life?’ I will reply that it was my visit to the Ashram and meeting with Amma.”

Sri. Satyapal Singh, Honourable Minister of State for HRD (Higher Education), said, “On her birthday, Amma is dedicating unique service activities for the destitute. No one else can do to such a magnitude. Amma is lighting the lamp of her heart in front of the world.”

Nearly a hundred devotees from Madurai brought traditional ‘Mulapari’ offerings to Amma.They had undergone a 9-day fast and performed a special ritual that involved the sprouting of seedlings in mud pots (Mulapari), “ululuing” ( kurava) while walking towards the stage

Sri. Y.S. Chowdry, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology & Earth Sciences, said “I heard about Amma a lot. But today is really a great day for me, having seen the reality. Amma whatever she has been doing is a great service to humanity–across the globe. There is no caste, color or creed division here. That
is not an easy thing. I am thinking even governments should learn and understand how she is able to run things.”

Honourable Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Sri. Jual Oram, said, “Amma’s service mission in the areas of tribal people is great and exemplary. Amma tries to see everyone as equal. Therefore I see God in Amma.”

Prof. P.J. Kurien, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, said in his speech earlier, “This is real birthday. Amma has set aside her birthday for wiping the tears of the poor and marginalised sections and selflessly serving them. She is the greatest paragon of service to the poor and suffering. Amma tries for her birthday to not be celebrated with pomp and splendour, but instead for extending selfless service to the people. This is real spirituality. In today’s world of deteriorating love and compassion, Amma’s love and compassion are flowing like the Ganges, transcending boundaries. They flow everywhere, reaching everyone without barriers of caste, creed or religion. Amma is the embodiment of Sanathana Dharma. She is not only our ‘Mother’ but the ‘Mother’ of the entire world.”

Cultural Programs by students of Amrita Vidyalayam as Amma continues darshan

New projects inaugurated included the provision of running water in Pandori, Jammu; the training of more than 1,000 tribals in digital literacy; 37 free homes for impoverished Keralites; and the construction of 8,000 toilets across the state. The Math also gave away the first of what will be 1,000 e-Cycles—bicycles capable of generating and storing electricity via a dynamo and solar panel—and gave certificates to graduates of its health-worker-training programme and tailoring-and-embroidery classes.

“For most of us, birthdays are happy occasions—a day to celebrate. We wish to receive as many gifts as possible and be joyous. We don’t like to listen to anything sad or depressing. If someone tells us some depressing news or reminds us of something unpleasant we say, “Please, not today! It’s my birthday!” But, as everyone knows, this is not how it is with Amma. She uses the occasion to direct everyone’s attention to the poor and suffering. We say, “Oh, Amma, it’s your birthday!” and Amma says, “Remember the poor and needy. Think of them. Understand their suffering. Help them in whichever way you can. Think of the depressed and lonely. Pray for them… Let’s together do something to ease their agony. As it is done every year on Amma’s birthday, the Mata Amritanandamayi Math helps couples having financial difficulty to have a traditional Indian wedding by providing all the requisite clothing, gold jewellery and feast, etc. This year, Sri. As part of the pledge to build 100 crore worth of toilets in the state of Kerala, it was announced that 8000 toilets were built last year, for a total of 10000 toilets that were in the last two years by the MA Math. Oommen Chandy, former Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala, presenting certificates to recipients of free surgeries at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (Amrita Hospital), representative of 1,940 economically challenged people receiving such certificates — including 200 recipients of heart surgeries, 70 of neurosurgeries, 20 of kidney transplants, 50 of head-and-neck surgeries, 50 of major gastrointestinal surgeries, 50 of urological and nephrological surgeries, 500 of dialysis treatments and 1,000 of cancer treatments. Yesterday the Honorable President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind had given the first set of certificates to five recipients.

Distribution of Amrita E-Cycle, an initiative of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, to villagers by Sri. Satyapal Singh, Hon. Minister of State for HRD (Higher Education). This project aims to provide rural electrification by utilizing available resources present in rural communities as an affordable alternative to current electrification schemes. The project transforms a common mode of transportation – a bicycle – into an innovative mechanism to provide free electricity to villagers who have intermittent or zero access to electricity.

Certificate distribution to tribals, who, Amrita Create, a research center at Amrita University, have trained in computer literacy using innovative tools. 1087 tribal adults and children have been certified as computer literate. Almost 60% of them were girls and 87% of them passed a government set exam. Certificates were distributed by Sri. Jual Oram, Honourable Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Sri. Leaders of 12 villages being presented with certificates verifying their respective villages as Open Defecation Free by Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. An ODF village is one wherein all households have access to a toilet and no human waste or sewage pollutes the village surroundings. These are some of the villages that are part of the 101 villages that are adopted by the MA Math.
