Onam celebrations – pookkalam, sadya, tug of war and cutural programs
4 Sep 2017, Onam celebrations, Amritapuri Ashram

For the last ten days, as per the tradition of the Onam harvest festival, the entire state of Kerala has been ordained with lush, beautiful flower mandalas.

After the satsang, Amma led all the assembled devotees in blissful dance to the tune of ti thi tara th thi tai…
Then she began serving the traditional OnaSadya feast to one and all. Finally, she fed Lakshmi, the ashram elephant.

The ashramites played tug-of-war to the amusement of all. First with two groups of brahmacharis battling each other, then Amma called on the “Aachans” (elderly male devotees) to do the same and finally the brahmacharinis. Amma enjoyed the show along with all those assembled.

    * Hanging brain matter removed, tribal boy gets a face lift at Amrita Hospital*

Manikandan, the son of plantation workers in Palakkad, Kerala, was born with a rare medical condition called Encephalocele. Encephalocele is a rare congenital disorder in which bones of a baby’s skull do not close completely in the mother’s uterus. This creates an opening through which brain tissue and cerebro-spinal fluid protrudes out of the head in a sac-like structure.

Manikandan’s parents watched their son’s life unfold as a daily, unending tragedy. Past infancy, patients usually live an isolated life, ashamed to show their face in public. Manikandan was no different – until earlier this week, a fist-sized ball of brain matter hung from his nose as a pendulum and he did not mingle with children his age because they would make fun of him. It obstructed his vision and deformed his nose and face.

A 10-member team of surgeons at our own Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center, Kochi changed all that, removing the entire deformity in a surgery that lasted 11 hours.

Dr. Subramania Iyer, head of the institute’s Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, explained their process: “It was a complex surgery. Manikandan’s encephlocele was very large which had pushed the bone of his right eye outwards. For surgery, his skull was opened and the normal brain isolated from the sac of non-functioning brain matter hanging from his face. The removal of the deformity left a defect in the skull, a portion of which had to be reconstructed. The patient’s eye sockets were repositioned to remove the deformity in the right eye, and the nose was also remodeled. All these were huge surgical challenges. Manikandan has now recovered fully from the surgery and is ready for discharge. He will now be able to attend school and participate in all social activities like any other child of his age.”

Doctors at Amrita say they were drawn to working at an institution that does not shy away from big challenges, and where patients in need can get treatment, regardless of the level of complication or their financial situation. Since 1998, Amrita Hospital has been building up a cutting-edge medical infrastructure that has become a leader in innovative procedures, and has treated more than 4.5 million people free of charge.

Amma devotees respond to hurricane Harvey’s devastation
September 5th, 2017 Houston, Texas, USA
Hurricane Harvey, one of the costliest and damaging tropical storms in United States history, devastated many lives and rendered millions of people homeless, without access to adequate food, water, and basic resources. Beginning on August 25th, 2017, the hurricane ravaged Houston, Texas and the surrounding areas, leaving destruction in its path.

The Houston chapter of Embracing the World has been responding to this disaster as volunteers from the state of Texas are hand-delivering food, pet supplies and basic hygiene products to several shelters and churches across the Houston area. Supply kits, containing baby wipes, feminine hygiene products and fresh water are being distributed in several locations, while fresh meals and packed lunches are being provided to families forced to leave their homes because of the storm.

  • Ganesh Visarjan at Amritapuri Ashram Aft…

    Ganesh Visarjan at Amritapuri Ashram
After the Ganesha Chaturthi ceremony the beautiful, ornate clay idol of Ganesha was placed at the Kalari where special pujas were held every day. Every evening, devotees sang bhajans fervently to Lord Ganesha. After nine days, as per tradition, the Ganesha idol was taken to be immersed in the ocean.
Lakshmi, the ashram elephant, led the procession. The idol was carried towards the main hall, the procession singing bhajans all the way. One could see people of all ages and nationalities join the procession, each with an orange ribbon around their heads, dancing to the tune of the music and drums.

When the procession reached the darshan hall, Amma stopped darshan for a moment to greet Lakshmi as she reached the stage

Finally, the idol was carried to the edge of the pier where it was immersed in the ocean, to be dissolved back into formless clay. One of the most beautiful aspects of the celebration is that, despite the sheer beauty of the Ganesha idol and the love and care with which it was crafted, it is offered into the ocean with joy and celebration rather than sorrow or regret. This reminds us that every object in this world is temporary and it will perish one day. So, without clinging to them, be attached to the Creator.
This ritual is designed to remind us of the universal truth that all objects with name and form are a manifestation of the formless principle or that One Truth.
