Why Wonder About Amma’s Sari Color?

Some may ask ‘Why do we care what color sari Amma is wearing?’   On Devi Bhava day, and especially after the puja, when Amma goes inside the Mandapam, one can hear many people in the hall – people of all ages – trying to guess the color.   To the person who may have never met Amma, or for someone who has never seen Devi Bhava, this game may seem unrelated to spirituality and even somewhat childish.  But it is this very child-like play that gives the game its spiritual aspect.  For many of us, Amma is our Mother, and we are Her children.  Amma herself tells us time and time again that we must cultivate childlike innocence along the spiritual path in order to progress.   Amma has said:

“Children, the wonder and the love that you felt as a child will never return unless you can again play like a child. Innocence is within you, hidden deep inside. You have to rediscover it. And for this to happen, you must go deeper and deeper into your spiritual practices. When you can dive deep into your own consciousness, you will realise this innocence one day. At that moment you will discover the child within you. You will experience the innocence, the joy and the wonder that were hidden inside of you, and you will realise they were always there. You merely forgot your innocence for some time. It is as if you suddenly remember something after having forgotten about it for a very long time. That childlike innocence deep within you is God.”

Being in Amma’s presence brings out that childlike quality in many of us.

May we all find that innocence.

  1. That and we are all a bunch of Amma-crazy people 🙂

BTW, all of you in Amritatpuri – please write more blog entries about what Amma is doing since She is right in there now. Pleeeez!

  2. Yes, please do talk about the sari color as much as you want, but please don’t forget to say the real things AMMA says – her words, how she moves through you etc. AMMA is a mother to everybody, not just the people in Amritapuri. Why else would she bother to move around the world?

  3. Praying AMMA to invoke the childlike innocence in this child of Yours and come nearer to You….

  4. When a true “Child” who is literally in the ‘moment’ tries to guess Blessed Amma’s Sari Color it is a game without an Ego.
Many people, when they guess the Sari color and happen to be wrong feel sad. Or when once in a while when they are correct, they beat their chest as if they are king of the jungle.
This, indeed is not being a child!
Let us all find peace and equanimity in our Blessed Guru’s presence and stop letting the mind ‘wax’ and ‘wane’ about this and that.

  5. response to ChetanG,
yes, amma wants us to be a child without an ego, but we can still beat our chests if we guess correctly or be sad if we don’t – just that amma does not want us to become attached to these emotions – We should just see it all as a game. Otherwise, there would be no joy at all in life!
