Endless Show of Hands
10 October 2007, Amritapuri
This afternoon, around 4pm, Amma came out to the Temple for one last time before leaving for Europe.
Amma talked briefly, joking, laughing. After singing Bhajore Bhajor Krishna Hari Ram, Amma asked for Prasad to be brought to the hall so she could distribute to everyone in the Temple.
A number of Brahmacharis had gathered next to Amma to help fill the plates. There were probably over 1000 people to be served. The plates were first passed to Amma, then out to everyone. When a plate had too little, Amma added more with Her bare hands. They were passed back, and back, and back – just like on the Tours when we would stop with Amma for lunch or dinner.
Every few minutes, Amma asked who hadn’t received. Each time, an endless show of hands went up. It seemed that the same number of people still hadn’t received prasad even though Amma had just passed out hundreds of plates. Amma looked surprised, laughed, and quickened the pace. It was as if the plates she had been serving were disappearing into another realm. Maybe the subtle beings had also gathered for prasad and were somehow snatching their share from our world.
A few times, a sort of rhythm was there and the plates flowed quickly and smoothly. Amma was really enjoying this. With a big smile on Her face, She grabbed the plates as fast as She could – like Kali with a thousand arms. Again, Amma asked for a show of hands, and again, the same number seemingly went up.
Finally, after about 20 minutes, the hands finally diminished.
When it was time to go, Amma stood up, raised Her palms over Her head, and walked up the stairs to the balcony. Along the way, someone shouted ‘Mata Rani Ki…..’ and ‘Jai!!!’ resounded throughout the hall. Amma lovingly looked down at Her children, turned the corner and disappeared down the hallway to Her room.
It will be another 2 months before we see Her again.
