night queen

7 apr 2008, amritapuri

the queen has appeared near the ashram kitchen in the middle of the night. she was wearing white and spreading an aroma around. slowly people smelled, heard.. came to visit her. she is not one, but two. epiphyllum oxypetalum is her official name.

yes, two white flowers have bloomed by the ashram kitchen.
the leaf is hanging down from the sunshade. the flower has come out through the side of a leaf. the green leaves and the white flowers are fresh and clean after the evening rain. i tell you she is simply beautiful.

nishagandhi, the queen of the night will bloom only once in a year, just for a night. and will die when the day starts. just alive for around 8 – 10 hours. but she could give joy to so many people who are awake.

  1. By giving your all, your everything, moment after moment, unstopping, continuously, to the world, without a thought for yourself, you will merge into Our Blessed Amma.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I never knew such a thing existed. To have pictures as well is such a blessing. Yes, she is beautiful. Like Amma she comes only for a moment. We try to experience, appreciate, and learn as much as we can in the little time that we have with her each year or for some every two years or more. Yes Amma gives much joy to ‘those who are awake’ literally and figuratively.

  3. Oh yes! Amma is one as well as two! She is herself and each of us at the same time, loving mother and the stern disciplinarian, the alpha and the omega, the darkness and the light, infinity and beyond!

  4. These are so-o-o-o beautiful. I can’t forget them. I looked for more on these flowers on the internet. But these ashram flowers were the most mesmerizing. Another name for the flower that I came across is Brahmakamal.
