9 Jan 2009, Amritapuri
The northern Solstice begins from 14th January. Every occasion in the sky makes a thing happen on Earth. And so it is a celebration on Earth. This one is for us a time to offer respects to Sun, the source of all life. By his northward journey the sun is making it an auspicious period of time for those who will depart from the world. And for those who will live on it is the harvest time. Sankranti is so many things put together.
We in Amritapuri celebrated our part of Sankranti on a day when Amma had a non- darshan day for herself. Friday, 9th, was not too early. On 14th Amma would be with Her Kodungalloor children.
A little after our tea time Amma was heard to be downstairs. All movements in the ashram became Amma-ward. Amma was threshing grain… What? Yes. Near the Amritavarsham peepal tree. All hearts ran there. Sure it was paddy. Beating a bunch of the shoots on anything like steel benches and separating the grain were seen a hundred of us. Many of us had urgent work, like loading things for the tour, doing books for the tour etc. Some of us returned. After about an hour and half, we got to hear : Amma is on the sea shore.
This cannot be missed. Amma must be in the company of the Sea, meditating. Many of us went there.
Amma was looking at the red setting sun. He was going down. He was still resplendent as he sank in the mist above the horizon. Amma bowed to Him. And it was as if to respond to Amma’s bowing, the Sun appeared again, as a soft red ball under the misty line.
Soon Amma immersed us in the ocean of devotion, with many old time, moving bhajans pouring out of Her.
