Our Golden days in Raichur
Davangere is truly blessed to get another opportunity to participate in the seva work in Raichur. Our previous one day visit to Raichur gave us such a lot of inspiration that we wanted to visit Raichur again for a longer time. Taking Amma’s permission we once again went to Raichur for a week. We reached Raichur on 18th April early morning. Our 27 members’ team consisted of non-teaching staff of Amrita Vidyalayam and devotees. It had people from all ages (from from 15 years to 60 plus years). We had 7 ladies in our team. 7 people joined us in…

living life with a smile
4 March 2010 Raichur This is my first trip to india. I felt so many differences between Japan and India. First, I was surprised at unique Smell of India. I can’t explain well but it’s so impressive because there is no smell in Japan. Second, I felt a power of religion. Almost all people in India pray to God and they have a mind which most Japanese don’t have. I think it’s great thing to live here. Third about poverty. I have known India has a lot of problems about poverty. But when I came to India, there are big big smiles.…

Our unforgettable visit to Raichur
It was a great opportunity for devotees from Davangere to do their little service towards Amma’s housing project going on in Raichur. The weather in Raichur is very hot and there are not many facilities around. It is located 30 kms away from the city. We reached the site by 11.30 am on 27th February. We were a bunch of 25: teachers, students and devotees from Davangere. We wanted to give good food to the workers and volunteers who are toiling day in and day out in that hot sun to build the houses for the flood affected people. We…

If I walk away, I am not doing my best
Today we went on a safari around the Athi River side of the Amrita children’s Home property line. We were surveying the construction site, taking documentation of the physical boundaries of the 11 acre plot. We found a mature indigenous tulsi plant with seed pods, so we collected them for our tulsi start. We also saw hippo tracks everywhere along the water’s edge. The natives say the hippos are more vicious than big wild cats, crocs and alligators. Especially if they have babies…….they are deadly if you get near their young. They tell us to stay completely away from these mammals.…

The golden era of my teaching career
Interview with Dr.T.K.N Balu (Visiting Professor in English, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus) I got an opportunity to interact with a veteran professor of English at Amrita School of Engineering, Amritapuri. He is a visiting professor here, and this is what he shared during our interaction. “I am a Tamilian, settled in Delhi. Let me tell you one thing first, that, being in Amma’s hometown is itself a great blessing to all of us, and we are extremely fortunate to be with Amma – something that many people in the world are longing for. This is my first visit to…

From tsunami to sambar
26 sep 2009 I had an opportunity to interact with four of our staff from Ettimadai Campus. Sri Balashanmugam (Office Assistant, Accounts Department, Amrita School of Engineering), Sri Senthil kumar (Admistrative Assistant, ASB ), Sri Loganathan (Senior Assistant, Student Welfare) and Mr. Dharmalingam (Hostel Incharge) These devotees of Amma had rendered voluntary service to the victims of the deadly tsunami that occurred on December 26, 2004. They were in charge of a section of the Nagapattnam Relief Camp in Tamil Nadu. Here is what they had to share with all of us. It was highly depressing to…

Planned ahead, dressed alike
All the Vidyamritam beneficiaries are dressed alike today – white and grey striped shirts and grey pants for boys and skirts for girls. The clothes fit each of them perfectly and everyone seems happy with the new set of clothes that they have received. 67.5 lakhs, one full year of systematic hard work, a source of income for rural tailors in various districts –the free clothes distribution for the 10,000 odd Vidyamritam scholars has many facets to it that are hardly known to the recipients, the volunteers distributing the clothes or the casual observers who see the children walking around…

Christmas Shopping for Charity
Zurich, 22.12.08 In some countries, one could think Christmas is all about money. Switzerland is sure one of them. That’s why Amma’s children thought to make the best out of it an offered people to shop gifts for charities. Hot Chai, steaming Chestnuts, glittering Jewelry and colorful flags with the Amma-Logo… It was impossible to oversea the market-stall at the Christmas fair in the Swiss town Affoltern, which is close to Zurich. Who didn’t stop because of the scent of spiced chai or delicious wafers, sure stopped because of Anatole’s music? The 8-year-old boy amazed each and everyone with his…
