We are very grateful to you
6 Sep 2008, Bawanipur, Bihar We had finished for the day. The doctors were winding up. A man was standing with his small child near us. The child seemed to be enjoying sitting on the fathers shoulders, heaving up and down. “Did you get your medicines?” Dr. Sachin asked. “Yes.” “What is that on your childs leg? Is that medicine or some other powder?” There was some white powder on the child’s calf. “Yes it is medicine.” Kishan is from Madhepur. “You have back pain”, said Dr. Sachin, “is that not so?” “Yes, we ran a long way. Never have…

Where do I Stay?
6 Sep 2008, Bawanipur, Bihar We were in Bawanipur – a village in the Purnia district of Bihar, which is by the side of the most affected district Madhepura. The government had set up a relief camp in a school. Our first medical camp in this relief and rehabilitation project. I had been helping control the crowd, talking to the people – the impatient adults and the curious children. After a couple of hours I found another job close to the entrance of the school. And then a woman came up to me and said something that I did not…

First day in the camp
6 Sep 2008, Bowanipur, Bihar After lunch the medical team set out for the first medical camp to be held at a place called Bowanipur. In many places the roads have been washed away and in some places the river is flowing across the road with a strong current. In one place the bridge had become so weak that it had tilted to one side and whenever any vehicle crossed it, they had all the passengers get down…

Reached Purnia
6 September 2008, Purnia, Bihar We arrived with the medical team at Purnia on the 6th morning after detraining at Kathiar, as the tracks further down have been washed away by the river at several places… We called on the local MP Shri Uday Singh, who has been very helpful from the beginning and has been helping out with the transportation, accommodation, logistics, local contacts, etc. An important aspect of the medical team is the Tele-medicine van from AIMS, which has satellite connectivity, along with facilities for X-rays, Pathological tests, ECG, Ventilator, etc. It will provide a great tool to…

First visit to flood affected Bihar
5 Sept 2008, Purnia, Bihar After the massive flood in Bihar, which has left half the state underwater, Amma asked me to go and scope out ways in which the Ashram can help. Brahmacharini Rasamarita Chaitanya was similarly instructed by Amma. I arrived in Patna on 2nd September and met with various IAS officers. They were very impressed with the relief-work the Ashram has done in the past—including 2004 tsunami and floods and earthquakes in Gujarat and Mumbai. A meeting was held with disaster-relief government officials. They agreed to give us maximum assistance with our relief efforts. On 3rd September,…
