  • Shaken by Love, not by earthquake

29 May 2012, Tokyo, Japan On the first day of Amma’s Tokyo program  (May 27th), the crowd was bigger than in the past. Amma sang ‘Bandalo Bandalo’ bhajan at the end of the first day program and she requested every one to do the patty cake. The Japanese people generally are very quiet and humble.  I think, they are not allowed to express their emotions publicly in their culture. But when Amma started singing and clapping to the ‘Bandalo Bandalo’ bhajan, even the Japanese people could not hide or control their emotions. They were laughing and clapping with great joy…

  • Fry day

19 May 2012, Amritapuri After the bhajan ended Amma marched straight down the ramp with a determined look. It was FRY day. In front of her were set up 8 dosa grills and 3 large vats for frying French fries. Amma immediately started cutting, herself, the 10 kilos of potatoes before her. She cut the potatoes as if this were her profession, finishing it off in a matter of minutes, before throwing them into the boiling oil. Adding some salt water to the oil for the finishing touch Amma started off a magical night. As soon as her batch was…

  • At the beach with Amma

April 20th, Korara Beach, New South Wales, Australia Anyone who has ever travelled with Amma on any portion of her world tour knows that long distances are covered over relatively short periods of time, on the ‘days off’ between all night programs. More often than not, Amma travels with the rest of the tour group by road. For most people who make these long trips by road, often covering over 1000km in a day, the rides are both the highlight and lowlight for the tour. Lowlight because very few people look forward to getting on a bus for 16+ hours…

  • Kanha He Ek? Gopi Anek!

Will she or won’t she?  That was the question on everyone’s minds on Holi.  Most years Amma has been in North India on this day, but this year it was a darshan day at Amritapuri.  Would she play Holi with us? Darshan was coming to a close and there was a Pada Puja at the end.  As the puja ended, it seemed that Amma might just stand up and leave.  But some devotees showed Amma a pichkkari and some coloured powders and her interest was clearly aroused.  She asked for the musicians to play “Ayi He Holi”.  “Ayi he holi…

  • Kanha Ek, Gopi Anek

8 Mar 2012, Amritapuri I had a great Holi.  Even though we said that we should not celebrate Holi on our campus since we did not want students throwing color on each other in the classrooms. Nevertheless I  got my share of holi- when the Chancellor of the university doused me with color as I hid behind Her chair 🙂 I had gone near Amma in order for her to bless two research proposals that were written by the Electrical Engineering Department. I saw our Vice Chancellor near Amma’s chair so I walked up and squeezed myself near him and…

  • Amma began Holi play?

It was a cloudy morning in Amritapuri. Amma came out of her house early for a few special group photographs with recent graduates of Biotech school of Amrita University. After the photographs had been taken in front of Her house, Amma looked up at all of the people standing on the back of the temple balcony, waiting for Her to enter, and asked, “Why has everything been set up inside the temple? I am going there !! (the main hall for giving darshan)” She promptly turned and walked towards the main hall. Immediately everybody panicked because nothing whatsoever was setup…

  • Wind turbines and Mahatmas

2 Mar 2012, Amritapuri I have heard of a yogic technique called “Samyama ” using which an accomplished Yogi can find out anything about any object in this universe. Moreover, they say that for a Self Realized Mahatma, the whole universe is an open book – any object will reaveal its nature of itself, as the Mahatma knows the inner nature of everything . Thus a mahatma will know the inner nature of an object, though He may not use the terminology that we are familiar with . Well yesterday, I had an experience which was possibly a glimpse into…

  • What did you give God?

11 Oct, Swiss Amma’s Swiss program started off well. She arrived directly after Milan and reached 4 hours after Devi Bhava. Some devotees had gathered outside the hall and were waiting to garland Amma. The Swiss program had started. Even being a working day, the crowds were quite big. Some faces that were familiar to me, sat sometime next to Amma, talking to her even after their Darshan. Evening was setting a mellow scene. Swamis started singing and a devotional throng sent a mystical tune to the happenings. One old devotee had come to Amma to ask a question. He…
