  • Story Time

San Ramon, California on Friday, June 6th, 2008 After Swami Amritatmananda’s satsang this evening, Amma asked everyone if they wanted a Her to answer questions or to sing bhajans. The majority of the crowd called out ‘bhajans’. Some voices asked for ‘Mata Rani’. One devotee asked for Amma to tell a story. Amma said that we should have the following threee attitudes: 1. Watch our thoughts carefully, 2. Be compassionate to the world and 3. Be truthful to others. She also talked about Prakriti, Vrikriti and Samskriti. Amma said that we have knowledge but we lack discrimination. To illustrate this…

  • As is Above, So is Below

24 – 25 May 2008, Kobe, Japan It is said that to show a sign of reverence one must look up upon that which is to be honored.  Upon seeing the set-up of the Kobe Home Stadium program, that was my first thought.  How could we all sit above and look down on our Beloved Amma with reverence?   Aren’t we supposed to gaze up at Her, not down? The program was set in a sports stadium.  The stage was set upon the edge of a soccer field.  With only a small walkway of about 8-feet separating the stage from a…

  • Padapuja50

5 May, ErnakulamAt the end of darshan on the last day, about 50 staff members of Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Amrita University, performed pada puja to Amma. Each person participated in a part of the puja; a few people for pouring the water on Amma’s feet, another few for applying the sandal paste, and others for applying the ornaments on Amma’s hands on feet. Amma told everyone to clear the stage, saying that these devotees have been waiting years to do this, and all of them should have the chance to see. Seeing so many offering their gratitude…

  • No Begging Outside

3 May, Ernakulam Swami Amritatmananda Puri gave a beautiful speech before Amma arrived for the evening program. He mainly talked about innocence, and how people tend to use temples as places to give their lists of complaints to God. He told one story. Once there was a man begging outside a temple. He was seated underneath a sign that read, ‘no begging allowed.’ When the authority in charge of the temple heard about the man, he came near him, and said, ‘no begging outside the temple.’ Hearing this, the beggar simply got up and went inside the temple. Sitting there,…

  • Festival begins

2 May, Ernakulam Amma reached the Ernakulam Brahmasthanam at night on the 2nd of May. The first program of Amma’s Kerala Tour starts tomorrow with a two-day brahmasthanam festival. Before Amma reached the brahmasthanam, the students from Amma’s school were chanting Vedic hymns very nicely, as well the Lalita Sahasranama and some bhajans. Actually, in the Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, all the students are required to attend the daily archana and evening bhajans. Amma was greeted by Sri Girish Kumar, chairman of Sripuram Tantrik Research Center, Irinjalakuda. Sri Girish presented a purna kumba to Amma, and then pada…

  • Four Bhavas, Four Colours

During the Singapore, Malaysia, Australia Tour, Amma held four Devi Bhavas – one in Singapore, and three in Australia (Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Sydney). Though Amma always remains the same – radiating Her divine love on everyone present –  each Devi Bhava had it’s own personality, so to say. Despite the fact that I was seeing the color of Amma’s sari live, rather than via the Internet in Amritapuri, finding and giving a name to the actual colour was almost as difficult as when in Amritapuri! Anyone entering a sari shop in India will immediately realize that there are an…

  • Pumping Iron, Gaining Punya

Amma’s Sydney programmes were held in the gymnasium of the Sydney Boy’s High School. At the end of Devi Bhava, around 6 am, after Amma had left for the airport, the hall was still bustling with activity. Everything from the rented sound-system and stage to the supplies for darshan, bookstall, flower-shop and other various departments had to be packed up and taken out of the hall. While a devotee brandishing a vacuum cleaned up the carpet covering the wooden floor, piles of filled boxes and supplies began to form in various corners of the hall.  They all had to be…
