naiva kurvan na karayan
Today’s Gita class discussed two important shlokas in the 4th chapter; 23 and 24. Swami explained that shlokas 21-23 explain the state of two kinds of Jnanis. One continues to perform actions for the benefit of society, even though action has no personal gain for him, having attained Knowledge of his true nature. The other as verse 21 says, ‘shariram kevalam karma,’ performs only karmas for the sustenance of the body, and remains in the absorption of Self-knowledge. This is continued in the 23rd shloka, ‘For one who is free of attachment, liberated from samsara, whose mind is established in…

Karma in Akarma
After my first post, I didn’t write any. I am thinking to write about the Bhagavad Gita class happening regularly here. Today, Swami Kaivalyananda discussed the meaning of the shloka, ‘karmanyakarma yah pashyet akarmani cha karma yah.’This means, ‘whoever see akarma in akarma, and akarma in karma, is wise among men.’ Swami explained Sri Shankara’s commentary. The first part, ‘he sees karma in akarma,’ means that when we ordinarily feel, ‘I’m not doing anything. I’m relaxing,’ this is also a karma. Even if the body isn’t active, the mind will be active. Even the thought, ‘I am not doing anything,’…

Thinking in Colour
Brahmacharis and brahmacharinis were sitting around the video screen, watching Amma’s program in London. She is giving a satsang and Swamiji is translating it. I look around. Some of my brothers are dozing off. It’s past midnight. Most had been up since 4:30 that morning. You cannot blame them for feeling sleepy. Amma started giving instructions for the Devi Puja. “You may be feeling bored now. But when we sit for meditation or puja, we should have the same enthusiasm that we have for an ice cream or chocolate. Try and participate in the puja with at least that much…

Grateful in San Jose
All these months after Amma’s US tour, the amritapuri ashram diary reports written by my amritapuri brothers and sisters have helped me keep my link with Amma and the ashram. It felt like I was there in the ashram when reading them. Every morning with great eaegerness and anticipation I open the webpage when I get to work and eagerly look up what Amma and Her children did the previous day at amritapuri. Oh what beautiful Bhajans She sang with them! What sweet satsangs they had. Now with Her in Europe I too feel empty with no accounts of what…

when you pray for the world
With some amount of regret i am writing this blog, some unfortunate events have happened for some of the residents since amma’s left for her european tour… first was bodhamrita chaitanya, he has had to undergo a surgery to remove a brain tumor, which quickly developed over the last couple of months. The operation was done yesterday at AIMS, by bramhachari doctor Ashok and colleagues. An archana was arranged by the ashram residents after breakfast to pray for a positive outcome from the operation, everyone participated and by evening we all heard that the operation was successful and now he…

waiting to see and talk
As usual, when Amma leaves Amritapuri, it feels like a desert – as if it has not rained for years. This time too after Amma has left for Europe tour, everything feels lifeless here. But Our all compassionate Mother showers us with rains of pure Love without making us suffer too much. our Amma, feels our plight before even we ourselves can feel it. It all started a few months back when Amma went for U.S. tour. Amma arranged for the live webcast from there so that Her children in Amritapuri can atleast get a glimpse of Her. Thanks to…

learning from nature
Om Amriteswaryai Namaha I had been thinking of writing about this incident on the blog for a while but somehow it didn’t come through. My friend and I generally get to the institute (across the backwaters) after the morning archana and tea, to start our work early. While waiting for the boat we used to watch the kites deftly swooping in on the fishes in their morning hunts and the crows endlessly trying to tail and chase them. One such morning we saw a bird in the backwaters trying to swim and a few crows trying to attack it. On…
