Amma’s Avatar
The descending of this Universal Consciousness in human form as Amma – A poet’s vision:
One moment in the Timeless Expanse of Consciousness. God was browsing the vast universe. God wanted to take form, to become manifest in a form. God went round scanning the space like one does Google Earth, looking for a place to be born.
Kerala, with bright shores, thick coconut groves and lush lagoons—this was chosen as God’s Own Country. God zoomed on a quiet village called Parayakkadavu, facing the roaring Arabbi Sea, on the narrow strip of an island. God could not resist its beauty. Then God chose the time, fixing positions of all planets on the way while descending on Earth: 9:00, 27th September 1953, local time. God chose the pious couple Damayanti and Sugunanandan as mother and father. And God descended.
Since childhood, Sudhamani was like a pearl in the shell. Unknown to the world outside, yet a total embodiment of all the virtues She came to demonstrate to the world at large. On a certain day She made others see Her Oneness with one form of Divinity when She assumed Krishna bhava on hearing the recitation of Krishna’s life story. Who knows how many times Krishna bhava had taken over Her before then? Or was it after all necessary for Krishna bhava to take over the One Who is beyond all bhavas?
A few months from then, Sudhamani made others see her oneness with Devi. That was at the end of what is called as Devi sadhana by the seaside, abandoned by family members. Lucky villagers, who did not have even a temple in the vicinity, got the Primordial Energy, Moola vigraha rupini Herself, to live amidst them.
So, from then on Sudhamani became noticed. Her qualities and deeds became noticed. Sudhamani began to give darshan in Krishna bhava and in Devi bhava. This was towards the end of 1975.
But it is not the whole story:
Dhanyamma in Mauritius was a pious devotee, pregnant for her first child. But she also carried a cancerous cyst in the same womb. Her ardent prayers to the Divine Mother resulted in darshan of Devi: “Devi had a very Indian face, wearing a bright crown and silk robes. She appeared before me one evening in 1971, as I lay to relax after the day’s work in the office. Devi asked me what I wanted. I asked for the safe delivery of my child, and offered my life in turn. She smiled benignly and disappeared. Later the cancer disappeared on its own, and I gave birth to my daughter. When I was pregnant with my second daughter, I had Her darshan again, but this time She was in white robes. I wondered who that was. Till 1987, when Amma came to Mauritius and I had Her Devi bhava darshan, I did not know that the Devi, who had given darshan two times and removed my anxiety, was none other than Amma.”
That means even before Amma started Devi bhava darshan in history in 1975, She had given darshan in Devi bhava to a devotee years ago, in distant Mauritius.
Even if one sits down to write Amma’s life-story, one cannot do “just that” for She has been in existence much before September 1953. Sri Aurobindo and Mother of Pondicherry had prophesized the imminent advent of Divine Mother. In Her divine reverie the Mother is quoted to have said, “Mother will descend…. She has already descended… She is playing divine childhood leelas on the other seashore.” This was at the time of Amma’s childhood.
Swami Vivekananda also declared in clear terms that Bharat Mata will arise and soon.
Amma’s deeds today stand testimony to these prophesies.
Knowers of Truth say, She is Existence Herself.

SHE is Universal Mother personified as human being. Regretfully how many amongst us recogonize Her as such!
Very Sweet Article Sandhya. I am a Mother (Pondicherry) Devotee… I have always longed to See Her in person. When I saw Amma and got the first hug, I felt there is definitely a link between the 2 Mothers 🙂
