  • Coffee blooms for Amma

Mananthavadi, Amma’s Anandavadi or the flower garden of Bliss! Verily so. The evening of 17th March saw a heavy downpour on the green hills of the lower western ghats. Manathavadi lies in this belt. A little before midnight, after the downpour had virtually stopped, Amma and Her Ashram children arrived in the Manathavadi Ashram. Were the hundreds of Manathavadi-human children alone in rejoicing Amma’s coming? No. The entire undulated region, lush with coffee plantation, rejoiced Amma’s long awaited arrival. They bloomed their rare white jasmine-like little bouquets. All at once, unlike say hibiscus or rose where each bud gets its…

  • In Holi Company

In Holi Company —Coloring is fun but getting colored is even more fun! In my childhood, I used to wait for the festival of Holi, because I used to enjoy splashing colors on others. That was the only day we kids were allowed to fool around. We even used to fill small balloons with colored water and then throw them at strangers. We would go to the house of a friend who lived by the roadside, and then hurl our water balloons at passers-by from the terrace. Most people wouldn’t mind, since they too would be in a festive mood.…

  • Millions flock to India s hugging guru

By Matt Sedensky AMRITAPURI (India): The droves who come here leave with no souvenirs, no memories of posh hotels, nothing more than they brought. All they came for was a hug. The woman offering the soft embrace is considered a guru, and her tender approach and simple message have galvanised followers to amass in crowds thousands deep at stops around the globe. Part of the appeal of Mata Amritanandamayi, or Amma, as she is universally known, are teachings she says transcend any single faith, let alone simply her Hindu upbringing. “My message is not unique,” she says through an interpreter.…

As I sit in my office today, I am wondering about the hype Woman’s day is creating in Delhi. Radio Shows, Sales etc are all eagerly awaiting March 8 to acknowledge the role of Women in today’s society. Suddenly my thoughts take me to Amma’s picture beaming on the wall and I knew I want to write something about the strongest yet softest woman I have ever come across and probably ever will. She keeps giving us a part of herself everyday, a fact that all of us are truly thankful about. The scar on her right cheek is a…
