On the level of never ending, infinite compassion towards man and all of creation, Amma is predictable. On the level of hugging and chanting with her children Amma seems predictable. At the same time Amma is totally unpredictable, and many times the expression of her strongest blessings catch us totally by surprise. In that moment of shock, the ego is startled into something otherworldly and she gets in and does her love-magic totally beyond words. These words are an attempt to share a bit of one such experience beyond words.

For this child Tuesday in Amritapuri, Meditation Day, has another name as well; “Guru Bhava Day”. Amma has told us that each Tuesday we can spend in meditation, there will be a definite forward step in our sadhana. This has certainly been confirmed in this one’s experience. One Tuesday stands out beyond all the others.

After a morning of sadhana, Amma comes and sits in her chair. Having placed his mat much earlier, this one is sitting close to Amma, a bit to her right with four devotees between us. There is a feeling of deep silence within Amma, a silence that permeates the whole hall. No one is stirring.

She’s looking straight ahead, and at the same time looking deep, deep within. In a sudden instant her left inner eye turns towards this child with a flash. A flash that takes over his entire being. Amma’s physical eyes continue to look forward, complete stillness.

A poem comes

Looking

When Yeshoda looks in
her Sweet Baby Krishna’s Mouth
she sees all of creation

When this child looks in
his Beloved’s Eye
he sees That which devours all of creation……………

After a little time she gives Shubamrita Swami the usual, so slight Indian nod without looking at him. He begins the Ma Aum meditation, “Amma would like all of her children to continue their meditation….”

In being with how to further share in words what is happening with that flash, the image and words come, “The moth being consumed by the flame. The flame it has desired since the creation of time.”

“Ahh,” he remembers, “This is also from another story, another poem…”
